Last October I pledged to watch 52 films directed by women. I figured this would be a cinch since I love movies and am an aspiring female filmmaker. This SHOULD have been a part of my work anyway. My initial goal was simple - one movie a week. Easy enough right? Not so much. Life happened, television became amazing, Beyonce put out an album and a bunch of other stuff that resulted in me not watching as many movies as I thought I would. On September 1, the organizers sent a reminder email. After my massive freakout after realizing I had only watched six films, it was time for a binge fest! By the time October 1 rolled around, I had fallen short of my goal.
Fortunately, the 25 films I watched were great. Some were outstanding. ALL of them were as meritorious as films created by male directors. That was the BEST part. Gender does not stop great story telling-regardless the genre. This process exposed me to great work from filmmakers both near and far. I really enjoyed the international films because of the beautiful landscapes. I laughed, I cried, I was inspired. And since I didn't meet my goal, now as we enter the first week of October, I get to try again! I've re-upped my pledge to watch 52 movies directed by women over the course of the next 12 months. Here are the 25 films I had the pleasure of watching in reverse order. I'm proud to say the last one was a short directed by Moi! Oh so exciting!
